The Taiwanese government and Saint Lucia are expected to sign another memorandum of understanding outlining their new diplomatic relations before May 2008.
Word of this came from the Taiwanese President who is paying a state visit to Saint Lucia. The Head of both governments signed an understanding expected to be duplicated when next they meet in Taipei. The Prime Minister called it a practical expression of the partnership between the two countries.
That expression was a memorandum of understanding signed between Taiwanese President Chen Shui-Bian and Stephenson King. It was signed on Monday as part of the official state visit of the Taiwanese President. The agreement followed a meeting between the Taiwanese and Saint Lucian delegations. They met at the Prime Minister’s Official Residence where Chen’s first order of business was signing the guest book. His Foreign Minister says it is a very comprehensive agreement. It includes the construction of an Arts theatre and the completion of other projects like the psychiatric hospital. The two leaders are expected to sign a similar agreement in May.
That is when the Prime Minister is scheduled to pay his own state visit to Taipei. The Taiwanese President arrived in Saint Lucia by military aircraft on Tuesday. He is expected to leave to continue his tour of the Americas on Thursday.
